Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was the third President of the United States, serving from 1801 to 1809. He had been the main author of the Declaration of Independence and was Vice-President under the previous President, John Adams.
Jefferson is often thought to be amongst the greatest of Presidents. He greatly increased the size of the United States by buying a vast area of land from the French (this is called the 'Louisiana Purchase'). He was a very clever man who spoke five languages. He is also famous for being opposed to slavery.
13th April was Thomas Jefferson's birthday, and that date is now celebrated as Thomas Jefferson Day - the perfect day to learn something about this great US President.
