After his father's sudden death, Edward V (1483) was only 12 when he became king. His uncle Richard was named as Regent to rule for him.
Edward's mother, Elizabeth Woodville, and her family set up their own council and tried to keep power for themselves. When Richard found out, he took Edward and his younger brother into his "keeping" at the Tower of London.
In June 1483, Parliament declared Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville's marriage unlawful. Their children were declared illegitimate.
Richard was declared King.
Three months later the Princes in the Tower disappeared and were never seen again. What happened to them? No-one knows, and probably never will.
