1 Moses was looking after the sheep of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led them out into the desert, to the mountain of God, Mount Sinai. 2 The angel of God caught Moses' attention by appearing as flames coming out of a bush. Moses looked carefully and saw that, although the bush was on fire, the flames did not consume it. Moses said "I will change direction and have a closer look, to see why the bush is not burning up."
4 When God saw that Moses was coming to look, he called out to him from the bush: "Moses! Moses!"
Moses replied, "Here I am."
5 The God said, "Do not come any closer! And take off your shoes, because you are standing on holy ground! 6 I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." Moses covered his face because he was afraid to look at God.
7 Then God said, "I have seen how my people in Egypt have suffered, and heard them cry at the hands of their slave masters. I have felt their sorrow, 8 and I have come to rescue them from the Egyptians and bring them instead to a large and fruitful land, a land of milk and honey, where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites live. 9 I have heard the cries of the children of Israel and have seen how badly the Egyptians have treated them. 10 So get ready! I am sending you to Pharaoh, to rescue the Israelites, my people, and lead them out of Egypt."
11 But Moses replied, "Why me? I'm not special! Who am I to go to Pharaoh and demand he let me take the Israelites away, out of Egypt?"
12. God reassured him. "I will be with you. And everyone will know that I am with you, when you lead my people out of Egypt and worship me here on this mountain."
