Lizards are really diverse and wonderful creatures. They can change colour, lose their tail, some are tiny and some are huge! Learn about lizards with the kids with our fun collection of colouring pages and worksheets below.
Lizards are reptiles which are found all over the world, except Antarctica. There are about 7,000 species of lizards and they have been on Earth for about 200 million years.
Most lizards have four legs and a long tail but some, such as slow worms, have no legs and long snake-like bodies. Lizards use their long tails to help them to swim, balance and hang on to trees. Some lizards are able to lose their tail if a predator grabs it, leaving the animal holding their tail whilst the lizard escapes and grows a new one.
The largest species of lizard is the Komodo Dragon which can grow to 3m in length and the smallest species is the Jaragua Gecko which is only 16mm long.
Chameleons are a type of lizard that can change colour. It was assumed that they changed colour to blend in with their background so that they could hide from predators. However, we now know that chameleons can change colour to communicate with each other and to express their mood. They also change colour to help them to control their body temperature.
