A Little About Flamingos
Flamingos are one of the most distinctive birds on our planet, with their stunning pink feathers, long necks, skinny legs and funny beaks.
They're often found in books and stories - Alice used them as croquet mallets in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass! People have been fascinated with flamingos for a long time, and they are also a popular theme in art and home decor.
There are many words used to describe a group of flamingos, such as a "colony" or "flurry", but my favourite is a "flamboyance" of flamingos!
Fun Fact: Flamingos are famous for their beautiful pink plumage, and this is actually due to their diet, which is rich in carotenoid pigments found in the small crustaceans and algae which they eat. Baby flamingos are born with grey feathers, and turn pink gradually after a couple of years. There is one mystery that scientists still can't agree on though - why do flamingos like to stand on one leg?
