Canterbury Cathedral has been a place of pilgrimage since Medieval times. Founded in 597 (although completely rebuilt between 1070 and 1077), the Cathedral is one of the oldest Christian buildings in England. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England.
Canterbury Cathedral is of course notorious as the setting for the murder of Thomas Beckett, Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1170. After his murder the cathedral was enlarged considerably to cope with the pilgrims visiting his shrine.
