Joseph Bruce Ismay (1862 1937) was Chairman and Managing Director of the White Star Line, his family's shipping company, which owned the Titanic. He was travelling on the Titanic to New York on its maiden voyage and was one of only 706 survivors, having managed to find space in a lifeboat.
Some people think that Bruce Ismay was partly responsible for the sinking of the Titanic, having sacrificed safety for luxury, speed and profit. He was also called a coward for escaping the sinking ship despite the decision to let women and children take the available spaces on the lifeboats.
