Sir Arthur Henry Rostron (1869 - 1940) was Captain of the ocean liner RMS Carpathia when it rescued the survivors of the RMS Titanic. When the Titanic struck an iceberg on 15th April 1912, the Carpathia answered her distress call and was able to rescue the surviving passengers and crew.
Captain Rostron was widely praised for his efforts to reach the Titanic, and his search for, and rescue of, the survivors. He was awarded two great honours: he was given a Congressional Gold Medal from the US Congress, and made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (which meant that he was then known as "Sir Arthur").
