Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from 1861 to 1865.
Perhaps the greatest President, Lincoln is best remembered for leading his nation through the American Civil War and abolishing slavery throughout the country. Six days after his army had finally triumphed in the Civil War Lincoln was assassinated while watching a play. His political philosophy was summarised in the first sentence of his most famous speech - the Gettysburg Address: that the United States had been founded as a new nation 'conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are equal'.
