The Republic of Vanuatu consists of over 80 tropical mountainous islands in the South Pacific, which were visited by European explorers and named the New Hebrides by Captain Cook in 1774.

Interesting Facts About Vanuatu

  • The volcanic Mount Manaro erupted in 2005, and the area is subject to tremors and tidal waves.
  • Although the population is only 250,000 there are an estimated 113 different dialects spoken, which reflects the diversity of settlers over 3000 years.
  • Rich cultural traditions are still evident in village life. In Porta Vila, the capital, there is a thriving food market where tourists can eat local dishes such as Lap-lap, a traditional cake make from root vegetables.
  • The most interesting wildlife can be found on the coral reefs around the islands, where you can visit the world's only underwater post office at Hideaway Island!
