  • The Kingdom of Eswatini is a tiny country surrounded by South Africa and Mozambique.
  • Eswatini is a proud, independent nation which is nonetheless heavily linked to South Africa for 90% of imported goods and 60% of exports.
  • The origimal name of Swaziland came from the word Swazi, meaning "people of Mswati", who was the first King. Eswatini is one of the few absolute monarchies in the world where the King is the embodiment of the nation. The last King had almost 70 wives.
  • Nsangwini Rock Shelter is covered with 4000 year old cave paintings by San bushmen which show hunting scenes.
  • Traditional Ngani tribal culture is widely celebrated. If you visit, don't be surprised to see  'warriors' in  colourful costumes and battle axes walking along the road!
  • Eswatini is considered a safe and friendly nation despite the many hippopotamus and crocodiles in its rivers and the surprising number of lightening strikes.
  • In order to protect the endangered white rhino in the Hlane Park, rangers resorted to cutting off their horns to stop poachers.

The Eswatini Flag

The main part of the Eswatini flag is a Nguni shield and two spears, representing protection from the country's enemies. The flag was adopted on October 6th, 1968, following independence from the British Empire.
