St George's Day

"Cry God for Harry, England and Saint George!"
William Shakespeare (Henry V)
St George's Day will be celebrated on Wednesday 23rd April 2009. St George (famous for
slaying the dragon) is the patron saint of England. He was a Roman soldier
who protested against the Roman torture of Christians, and was killed for
his beliefs. He is most famous for the story of his fight against the
dragon.
By interesting coincidence, one of England's most famous men, William
Shakespeare, was not only born on 23rd April (1564) but also died on 23rd
April 1616.

This England flag prints out onto a piece of A4 paper, although
you may need to trim the edges. Use them as table mats for a St George's Day

one onto card and make an easy jigsaw?

Jerusalem
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire.
I shall not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green & pleasant land.
(William Blake)
