Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Rainbows and Brownies

Early in the last century an army general called Robert Baden-Powell came up with a plan for training boys and keeping them occupied. In 1907 he held his first scout camp, and in 1908 he published his ideas in the book "Scouting for Boys" which was a great success, and many boys became Boy Scouts. Baden-Powell led the organisation.

At the Scouts' first rally in 1909 a small group of girls turned up to insist that they, and hundreds of other girls they represented, wanted to be Scouts too. So in 1910 Baden-Powell formed the Girl Guides. His sister Agnes looked after the new organisation and his wife Olave also became involved.

As I am sure you know, the scouting movement has a huge following worldwide! 2007 is the Centenary year for scouting, so we have gathered together a collection of links to help you find out all about scouting and get more involved if you wish.
