Diary Of A New Mum - Week 6
Days From Heaven, Evenings From Hell
This week I took Jessica-Ann on her
first visit to another house. We went to see my mom, which required huge amounts
of planning, even though she only lives thirty miles away. It was also my first
trip out in my new car – a present from my wonderful husband as he didn’t want
me to feel stranded. Jess loves being in the car – I think like most babies it
has a soothing effect on her.
She was fantastic at my mom’s house. The
perfect baby. We popped in to see my sister on the way home and she was
fantastic there too (she slept through the whole thing, actually). But then,
just before Paul came in the door after a hard day at work, her colic took hold
and she started to scream.
I feel so sorry for him. It must be
horrible, coming home to all that chaos. I picture him driving home, coping with
the traffic, shrugging off the stresses of the day, just looking forward to
seeing his loving wife and cooing baby. Then he walks in and is greeted by a
harassed wife and a colicky infant, who is thrust into his arms by said harassed
wife who wants to put her feet up after running around all day!
Why are evenings the worst time for
babies? Some theories are that it’s because the parents are tired and stressed.
This may be true, but there have been times this week when Jess has been such a
treasure all day that I was far from stressed when she started crying in the
evening. It is a mystery. And it’s all very well for people to tell you, ‘babies
cry’. When all you want is to help your helpless little bundle, you need
something more useful than that!
On my list of stresses at the moment
are: books that tell you when your baby should be sleeping/feeding/pooing/playing;
health visitors who give you ‘that look’ when you say you’re not breast-feeding;
people who park their cars across the pavements, forcing you on to the road with
your pram…
And visitors! Bless them, but don’t they
realize that babies are unpredictable little creatures and their parents need to
go with the flow? I can’t plan having a bath at the moment, let alone when
people can come and see Jessica-Ann. Besides, most of our friends work all day
so the only times for visiting are evenings and weekends, which just doesn’t
work for us. Evenings are when Jess cries the most and are usually spent with
one of us walking her round the town in her pram trying to calm her, and
weekends we’re so exhausted we just want to lie on the sofa and sleep. Even
getting dressed seems like too much effort at the weekends!
Despite all this, we invited my sister
and brother-in-law over for dinner on Thursday. All was going swimmingly until
Jess’s colic started. Cue Paul and I taking turns to try and calm her, while Sis
and Hub sat downstairs, probably feeling really uncomfortable. Eventually they
snuck out, after doing the washing up for us, bless them. I joked to Paul that
we’ll probably not see them again until Jess is two – I hope this isn’t true!
