Diary Of A New Mum -
Week 21
Milk Is Not The Only Food
This week Jessica-Ann decided that she
doesn’t like milk anymore and wants only solids from now on. This is a problem
of catastrophic proportions – babies are supposed to get most of their nutrients
from milk until they are at least six months! And I can’t go to the doctors or
health visitors for help – they’ll just tell me off for weaning her ‘early’.
Deep breath. Calming music. Don’t panic.
It all started on Monday when I had to
go to the doctors for a blood test (don’t ask) and left Paul to give Jess her
usual 11.00am feed, which consists of 5-6oz of milk, followed by a taster of
vegetables (or in Jess’s case, a vat of sweet potato).
He’s done this a hundred times before,
no problem. But this time when he gets into position for feeding, Jess screams
her head off – and boy, can she scream. The willful little angel refused to take
so much as a mouthful of milk but gladly wolfed down the potato and carrot combo
we’d lovingly prepared for her.
It happened again the next day, but once
again I wasn’t there to help. This time an essential trip to Ikea had got in the
way and I arrived home to a harassed husband and a smug looking baby with a
potato beard.
What had gone wrong? We’d followed the
book to the letter. It clearly states that the baby will take all its milk
first, followed by a cube or two of veg. Once again we have the problem of
Jessica-Ann not reading the book! She has her own ideas, and prefers the chunky
stuff to the white stuff.
Who can blame her? She’s lived off
nothing else for four and a half months now. I’d be a bit bored with it too!
Thankfully she seems to be making up her milk at her afternoon feed, so at least
we know she won’t be suffering from malnutrition before she’s even six months
old.
We decided to go with the flow and not
bother offering Jess her milk at all the next day. What happened? You guessed
it. The little monkey cried for the milk and then downed 5oz straight off. That
day she ate a record amount of milk, as well as three baby-meals. A tiny little
thing – I don’t know where she puts it.
Still no luck trying to get her to drink
water, though. We’ve tried it in every conceivable cup and bottle and Jess just
turns up her nose and pushes the offending teat out of her mouth with a sneer. I
even tried adding juice (just the tiniest drop) but this fared no better. One
thing is certain about my little angel – she knows what she wants. I hate to
admit it but she does take after her mum…
Embarrassing moment of the week: talking
to Paul’s sister (who happens to be a nurse) and asking why Jess was finding it
so difficult to drink from a beaker. Paul’s sister looked horrified and told us
that babies don’t drink from beakers until they are at least 9 months old! Oops.
