Clothing Crisis For New Mums
By Joanne Phillips After giving birth our bodies feel like they will never be the same again. This isn't surprising, giving what they've just been through. The weight comes off very gradually, no matter how much running around you're doing looking after baby. You are caught between not wanting to wear your "huge" maternity clothes, and not fitting into your pre-pregnancy clothes either. This can be incredibly depressing for new moms when they go to their wardrobes to get dressed every morning. It doesn't help when your joints creak and ache, or when all the other new moms you know all seem to look so glamorous and stress-free. How we look is closely tied in with how we feel - especially after having a baby. Not only has your body changed, often beyond all recognition, but you also have to get used to a whole new identity - Mommy! Even if you could fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes (which you can't so don't even try), would they be right for the new you? As a mom you are going to need a very specific type of wardrobe, and the secret is to dress for comfort as well as style. Crawling around on the floor, kneeling up and down all day, getting covered in baby-vomit and goodness-knows what else requires clothes that are crease-free, washable and easy to wear. Of course, clothes like these don't scream STYLE. And comfortable fabrics have a tendency to show off all those lumps and bumps you suddenly have. Add to the mix swollen ankles, stiff joints and a serious case of mirror-fear and it's not surprising many new moms simply give up and stay indoors! Don't hide away - you have a beautiful new baby to show off. And getting out and about in the early days of your baby's life really helps to ward off Post Natal Depression (or 'Baby Blues'). There is a solution, so don't despair. First of all be realistic - pack all your pre-pregnancy clothes away with a label that says, 'Do not open for at least six months.' Next, be gentle with yourself. You've just come through the most amazing experience of your life and no one (except you) expects you to look like a fashion model. When you feel ready, head for the shops and invest in a capsule wardrobe consisting of the following:
Keep all the items to one color palette and when trying them on remember to kneel, sit and bend to make sure they are really comfortable. If these items only last you for a few months because the weight starts to drop off - great! You won't be complaining. But do invest in clothes that fit you NOW rather than waiting until you lose the weight - you deserve to look and feel a million dollars. * * * Joanne Phillips is a writer and ghost-writer from the UK.
